Syria: More Than 1 Million Children Sign Appeal for Peace
Children of all Christian denominations in Damascus, Homs, Yabroud, Aleppo, Marmarita and Tartus are marking today as the Action Day for Peace.
This week, children at more than 2000 schools across Syria are drawing their images of peace and writing messages to the political decision-makers of the European Union and the United Nations under the motto “Peace for Children.” More than one million children are also signing a petition. This appeal for peace is a joint campaign sponsored by Catholic and Orthodox Christians in Syria, while all religious communities have been invited to take part.
Pope Francis to Church in Americas: bring the balm of Christ's presence
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a Video Message to the Church in the Americas, to mark the Jubilee of the Americas, organized by the Bishops’ Conference of Latin America (CELAM) and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
Scheduled to take place in Bogota, Colombia, from the 27th to the 30th of August, the theme of the continental Jubilee celebration is taken from Pope Francis’ homily at Mass on May 2nd, 2015, at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he had gone to visit as part of preparations for the canonization of St. Junipero Serra: “May a powerful gust of holiness sweep through all the Americas during the coming Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy!”
Duty of human beings toward creation is to lend it a voice
(Vatican Radio) “Praying for creation or praying with creation?” that was the question posed by the preacher of the Papal Household, Fr Raniero Cantalamessa at Vespers on Thursday evening.
Against the majestic backdrop of St Peter’s Basilica and with Pope Francis looking on, Fr Cantalamessa told those present that “God did not program creation as if it were a clock or a computer in which every movement is programmed from the beginning, except, he added, maybe for some periodic updates.”
Pope Francis heralds upcoming Day of Prayer for Care of Creation
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis called attention on Sunday to the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, to be celebrated this coming Thursday, September 1st. A major global ecumenical stewardship initiative, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation began in 1989 under the leadership of the Orthodox Church.
Pope Francis established the Day for the Catholic Church by a letter dated August 6th, 2015, and addressed to Cardinals Peter Turkson and Kurt Koch, respectively the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity.
Pope at WYD Mass says mercy matters more than fashions
(Vatican Radio) Over a million and a half young people from across the globe gathered on the outskirts of Krakow on Sunday morning for the final mass of World Youth Day. The celebration, led by Pope Francis, culminated in the announcement of the venue for the next event, scheduled to take place in 2019.
During the Mass, the Pope told the young people that each one of them is precious and valued by God, who doesn’t care what clothes they wear or what kind of cell phone they use. He urged them to be courageous and to share God’s love with others, as our correspondent in Krakow, Lydia O’Kane reports….
Pope inspires confidence and courage in young people at WYD
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis welcomed young people gathered in Krakow for World Youth Day, in an official ceremony on Thursday evening.
Vatican Radio’s Lydia O’Kane, who is in Poland with Pope Francis, spoke with Bishop John Keenan from the Diocese of Paisley, who has travelled from Scotland with a group of young pilgrims, immediately after the ceremony to gauge the reaction to the Pope’s words.
